Easy Ways to Keep Your Aeroplan Account Active

Often times I hear stories about how someone’s Aeroplan points expire and they get too discouraged to try to earn points again, almost thinking that earning points are a scam. For Aeroplan, you need to keep your account active once every 12 months and your points will never expire. They used to have a policy where points would expire after 7 a year maximum. I am so glad that they got rid of that policy, making Aeroplan one of the top loyalty points in Canada.

Many people tell me that they do not travel enough to get any use out of points. But there are so many different ways to earn points without actually flying.

Remember, you only need 1 activity every 12 months to keep that account active. Some people may find it difficult because they do not routinely use any of existing methods to keep their account active. To me, that just means that they are not interested in collecting points or do not see the value in points. However, for those of you who see the value in collecting points, below are some of what I think are the easiest ways to keep your Aeroplan account active (assuming that you do not fly on Air Canada or Star Alliance partners):

1- Having a co-branded credit card:

2- Car Rentals

  • You can earn Aeroplan points with Avis or Hertz

3- Online Shopping

  • Shop.ca
  • Costco.ca
  • eSTORE

4- Retail

  • Bose
  • Esso
  • Home Hardware
  • Sobeys
  • Uniprix
  • UPS Store

5- Surveys

Here is a complete list of all the different earnings options with Aeroplan.

Personally, aside from flying on Air Canada flights, I usually have at least 1 Aeroplan co-branded credit card to keep my account active. Otherwise, I fill up gas at Esso and do AskingCanadian surveys to earn most of my Aeroplan points.

I wrote mostly about how to earn points in the above posts. When it comes to redeeming points, you can refer to our friends at Easy Award Booking.
